my italian haircut!

Finally, after one year of being in Italy, I found a good hairstylist. Really this is my second time getting my hair done in Italy, but the first time I wasn't really impressed. Later I found out that the place I had gone to has a reputation of doing "assembly line" cuts - a line of people getting their hair washed, a line of people to be seated and hairstylists moving from chair to chair, sometimes moving between clients at the same time.

Elena has been kindly urging me to get my hair done, and tomorrow I have an important meeting about a teaching job, so that pushed me to go to the stylist's. Serendipitously the person I had been talking to this morning had just been recommended a place near her house, so off we went this afternoon. 15 minutes later, I came out with this...

Honestly I have a low opinion of my hair because it seems to look the same no matter what I do - a tangled mess of limp waves (no matter if I blow dry it straight or not). I walked into the salon and the stylist said politely, so you would like... and made gestures to what kind of cut (my friend had told him I was deaf and wouldn't understand him if he spoke to me). I just said, ok, gesturing whatever. At my appointment time, he sat me down and started clipping away (alot!), and I couldn't tell what it would look like, and then he asked politely if I wanted it shorter, and I said no. He looked upset like I said the wrong thing (later I realized that although he was "asking" me, it wasn't really a question, it was polite suggestion. Italian. pft) But after he started drying it, I was like, ooh! this is nice!

I was smiling after he was finished, but he looked at me in the mirror and said, next time we'll cut it a little bit shorter, ok? (Pleasantries aside, I guess!)

Now I feel more Italian on the outside. ;-) ha!

I followed what the hairdresser suggested. There's many things I'd love to do with my hair but are very American things and it's better the hairdressers here stick with what they know!

Well the hairstyle didn't last very long - this morning was nice enough but despite not getting it wet in the shower, the steam curled it up. *sigh*
