p.s. that sausage thing?
Is blood sausage. I figured it out the other day when we were watching this Czech movie that takes place in the late 1800's early 1900's. In the first scene you see one of the main characters talking to a pig that's broken his leg, soothing him. Then they slaughter him, and from the cut they made on him, they put a bowl to collect all the blood that comes out. Libor said, that! that stuff is in the sausage! OH! Blood sausage. It was quite good. :-) Very juicy. Libor and I split it in half and cut it up - I made mine into a sandwich out of bread, sauerkraut, blood sausage and spicy mustard. MMMMMM. Lip smacking delicious.
I wanted to write about the bread but hadn't figured out how... the bread here is quite good, but I have to say there's NOTHING like it in the United States. I've been trying to identify it and place it with some bread we have in the US, but the closest I can come is rye bread. However in the US when we think of rye bread, we think of those really hard small loaves of bread? Here it's not the same thing. It's like a regular loaf of oven-baked peasant bread (no form, hard crust, soft inside), made from whole wheat and rye, and cumin seeds. That adds the different flavor. You can go to a supermarket here and choose among a selection of breads from different towns. No brands of bread, but based on what town it came from. There are subtle variations I can pick up sometimes, but most of the time I have no idea what the difference is. (And this is coming from a foodie)
Surprisingly enough, all my clothes still fit. :-) I'm not as fit and trim as I used to be when I was climbing, for sure, but I'm not fat either. If I ate Libor's mom's food all the time, I would be. But the way we eat in Brno offsets the occasional visits to Libor's parents' house in Breclav. ;-)
Yesterday Libor and I were watching a soccer game on TV, sipping some beer when he looked at me and said, how come you haven't written about Czech beer on your blog? So, okay, soon I'll write a post about that. Not today. I have some studying to do and my tea is almost ready. :-)
